magical realism

The book thief written by Markus Zusak is a perfect example of magical realism. Magical realism is a type of genre that holds a lot of realistic and truth in its pages but also has fantasy/surreal aliments scattered throughout the storyline. Magical realism is meant to capture the reader, it makes the reader think about what’s actually true in the world because with every good lie comes mostly truth, just a slight alteration to the truth is the perfect lie. A perfect example of this is in the novel “the book thief”. In this story, we are introduced to the character “death”. Death is presented in a human-like way, he is given feelings and emotions “like humans” he is given a heart “Even death has a heart.” Since death has a heart does this mean death can love? does this mean deaths heart beets? This is what magical realism makes you think about, all of these different questions are left unanswered and for us to find out our selves.
