The Handmaid’s Tale uses amazing crafting of symbols and detailed explanations to cleverly convey Atwood’s idea.

What is the message that Atwood is trying to get across to the reader in the handmaid’s tale? Atwood enforces to the reader to realize how something like “grillade” could come to fruition with certain extremists in leadership roles. She wants the reader to understand how the current direction of society could eventually lead to such a regime like “grillade”.

QUOTE: “I used to think of my body as an instrument, of pleasure, or a means of transportation, or an implement for the accomplishment of my will . . . Now the flesh arranges itself differently. I’m a cloud, congealed around a central object, the shape of a pear, which is hard and more real than I am and glows red within its translucent wrapping.” Then explain how this amazing crafting meteoric language helps the reader understand the message that Atwood is trying to get across.

QUOTE: “Every night when I go to bed I think, In the morning I will wake up in my own house and things will be back the way they were. It hasn’t happened this morning, either.” Explain how this quote shows the reader how the character offred stays sane… she imagines “Every night when I go to bed” that she is going to wake up in the morning and be in her old life, with her daughter and her husband. This is an effective use of crafting of language because it gives an insight into the Character offred mind… (or something like that)

    Do you know what SPECIFIC imagery methods you’ll be writing about in each body paragraph? I think that symbolism may be more straightforward and that is created in her text through the amazing crafting of language.
